Linux Kernel up to 5.10.44/5.12.11 AMD Display hw_init memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.44/5.12.11. The impacted element is the function hw_init of the component AMD Display. The manipulation results in memory leak. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2021-47253. There is no exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.44/5.12.11. Affected is the function hw_init of the component AMD Display. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Fix potential memory leak in DMUB hw_init [Why] On resume we perform DMUB hw_init which allocates memory: dm_resume->dm_dmub_hw_init->dc_dmub_srv_create->kzalloc That results in memory leak in suspend/resume scenarios. [How] Allocate memory for the DC wrapper to DMUB only if it was not allocated before. No need to reallocate it on suspend/resume.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2021-47253 since 04/10/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.10.45 or 5.12.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9e8c2af01046/aa000f828e60/c5699e2d863f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
