Linux Kernel up to 5.12.10 nfs_get_client null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 5.12.10. Impacted is the function nfs_get_client. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-47260. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.12.10. This affects the function nfs_get_client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFS: Fix a potential NULL dereference in nfs_get_client() None of the callers are expecting NULL returns from nfs_get_client() so this code will lead to an Oops. It's better to return an error pointer. I expect that this is dead code so hopefully no one is affected.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2021-47260 since 05/21/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241175 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7607-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.4.273, 4.9.273, 4.14.237, 4.19.195, 5.4.126, 5.10.44 or 5.12.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
