Microsoft Windows 2000/XP GDI memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP. This affects an unknown function of the component GDI. This manipulation causes memory corruption. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5758. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is recommended that the affected component be replaced with an alternative.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component GDI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Graphics Rendering Engine in Microsoft Windows 2000 through 2000 SP4 and Windows XP through SP2 maps GDI Kernel structures on a global shared memory section that is mapped with read-only permissions, but can be remapped by other processes as read-write, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and crash) and gain privileges by modifying the kernel structures.

The bug was discovered 11/06/2006. The weakness was shared 11/06/2006 by Cesar Cerrudo and LMH with Argeniss as MS07-017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at projects.info-pull.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-5758 since 11/06/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in C++ and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at projects.info-pull.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2454 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24911 (MS07-017: Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925902)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90389 (Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-017)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30042), Tenable (24911), SecurityFocus (BID 20940†), OSVDB (30214†) and Secunia (SA22668†). The entries VDB-1086, VDB-2990, VDB-35900 and VDB-36005 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
