Details
A vulnerability was found in Abisource Community Abiword up to 2.2.10 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ParseLevelText' of the file ie_imp_rtf.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the RTF import feature in AbiWord before 2.2.11 allow user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via an RTF file with long identifiers, which are not properly handled in the (1) ParseLevelText, (2) getCharsInsideBrace, (3) HandleLists, (4) or (5) HandleAbiLists functions in ie_imp_RTF.cpp, a different vulnerability than CVE-2005-2964.
The bug was discovered 10/02/2005. The weakness was published 10/13/2005 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2972 since 09/19/2005. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20024 (Fedora Core 3 : abiword-2.0.12-11 (2005-989)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 2.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (20024), SecurityFocus (BID 15096†), OSVDB (20015†), Secunia (SA17199†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-9457†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
