lscfg in ibm aix 5.2 and 5.3 does not create temporary files securely which allows local users to corrupt /etc/passwd and possibly other system files via the trace file.

The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was disclosed 10/23/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3289 since 10/23/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1118 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
