A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file etc/passwd. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
lscfg in ibm aix 5.2 and 5.3 does not create temporary files securely which allows local users to corrupt /etc/passwd and possibly other system files via the trace file.
The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was disclosed 10/23/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3289 since 10/23/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1118 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28552 (AIX 5.2 TL 7 / 5.2 TL 8 : devices.chrp.base.rte (U805550)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115326 (IBM AIX lscfg Command Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
