Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Eclipse Open J9 up to 0.43.x. Affected is the function Xgc:concurrentScavenge of the component Concurrent Scavenge Garbage Collection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer access with incorrect length value vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-805. The product uses a sequential operation to read or write a buffer, but it uses an incorrect length value that causes it to access memory that is outside of the bounds of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In Eclipse OpenJ9 release versions prior to 0.44.0 and after 0.13.0, when running with JVM option -Xgc:concurrentScavenge, the sequence generated for System.arrayCopy on the IBM Z platform with hardware and software support for guarded storage [1], could allow access to a buffer with an incorrect length value when executing an arraycopy sequence while the Concurrent Scavenge Garbage Collection cycle is active and the source and destination memory regions for arraycopy overlap. This allows read and write to addresses beyond the end of the array range.
The advisory is available at gitlab.eclipse.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-3933 since 04/17/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
