Ghostscript up to 10.03.0 OPVP Device Driver code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Ghostscript up to 10.03.0. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component OPVP Device Handler. The manipulation of the argument Driver with an unknown input leads to a unknown weakness. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Artifex Ghostscript before 10.03.1. contrib/opvp/gdevopvp.c allows arbitrary code execution via a custom Driver library, exploitable via a crafted PostScript document. This occurs because the Driver parameter for opvp (and oprp) devices can have an arbitrary name for a dynamic library; this library is then loaded.

The advisory is available at bugs.ghostscript.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-33871 since 04/27/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214042 (EulerOS 2.0 SP10 : ghostscript (EulerOS-SA-2025-1004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 10.03.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at ghostscript.readthedocs.io.
