Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8.5. This affects the function wake_and_executes of the component AMD Display. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Disable idle reallow as part of command/gpint execution [Why] Workaroud for a race condition where DMCUB is in the process of committing to IPS1 during the handshake causing us to miss the transition into IPS2 and touch the INBOX1 RPTR causing a HW hang. [How] Disable the reallow to ensure that we have enough of a gap between entry and exit and we're not seeing back-to-back wake_and_executes.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-36024 since 05/17/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 6.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2aac38744561/6226a5aa7737 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
