Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8.9 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function memdup_user_nul of the component bna. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null termination vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-170. The product does not terminate or incorrectly terminates a string or array with a null character or equivalent terminator. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bna: ensure the copied buf is NUL terminated Currently, we allocate a nbytes-sized kernel buffer and copy nbytes from userspace to that buffer. Later, we use sscanf on this buffer but we don't ensure that the string is terminated inside the buffer, this can lead to OOB read when using sscanf. Fix this issue by using memdup_user_nul instead of memdup_user.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-36934 since 05/30/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/22/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 235462 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7496-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.314, 5.4.276, 5.10.217, 5.15.159, 6.1.91, 6.6.31 or 6.8.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bd502ba81cd1/80578ec10335/6f0f19b79c08/0f560240b4cc/06cb37e2ba64/e19478763154/1518b2b498a0/8c34096c7fdf is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (235462). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
