Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Ollama up to 0.1.33. Affected by this issue is the function TestGetBlobsPath of the component Digest Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-23. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
Ollama before 0.1.34 does not validate the format of the digest (sha256 with 64 hex digits) when getting the model path, and thus mishandles the TestGetBlobsPath test cases such as fewer than 64 hex digits, more than 64 hex digits, or an initial ../ substring.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-37032 since 05/31/2024. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 0.1.34 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
