A vulnerability has been found in ZipGenius Standard 5.5.1.468/Standard 6.0.2.1041/Suite 5.5.1.468/Suite 6.0.2.1041 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part in the library zgtips.dll of the file zipgenius.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in ZipGenius 5.5.1.468 and 6.0.2.1041, and other versions before 6.0.2.1050, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a ZIP archive that contains a file with a long filename, which is not properly handled by (a) zipgenius.exe, (b) zg.exe, (c) zgtips.dll, and (d) contmenu.dll; (2) a long original name in a (a) UUE, (b) XXE, or (c) MIM file, which is not properly handled by zipgenius.exe; or (3) an ACE archive with a file with a long filename, which is not properly handled by unacev2.dll.
The bug was discovered 10/04/2005. The weakness was published 10/21/2005 by Tan Chew Keong with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3317 since 10/27/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38478 (ZipGenius Multiple Archive Formats File Name Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 5.5.1.468 eliminates this vulnerability.
