Details
A vulnerability was found in parisneo lollms up to 9.5 on Windows. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function sanitize_path_from_endpoint/sanitize_path. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-29. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '\..\filename' (leading backslash dot dot) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A path traversal vulnerability exists in the parisneo/lollms application, specifically within the `sanitize_path_from_endpoint` and `sanitize_path` functions in `lollms_core\lollms\security.py`. This vulnerability allows for arbitrary file reading when the application is running on Windows. The issue arises due to insufficient sanitization of user-supplied input, enabling attackers to bypass the path traversal protection mechanisms by crafting malicious input. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files, information disclosure, and potentially a denial of service (DoS) condition by including numerous large or resource-intensive files. This vulnerability affects the latest version prior to 9.6.
The advisory is shared for download at huntr.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-3429 since 04/06/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/26/2024). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 9.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
