zenml-io ZenML up to 0.55.4 /api/v1/users/test_race race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in zenml-io ZenML up to 0.55.4. Affected is some unknown functionality of the file /api/v1/users/test_race. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-366. If two threads of execution use a resource simultaneously, there exists the possibility that resources may be used while invalid, in turn making the state of execution undefined. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A race condition vulnerability exists in zenml-io/zenml versions up to and including 0.55.3, which allows for the creation of multiple users with the same username when requests are sent in parallel. This issue was fixed in version 0.55.5. The vulnerability arises due to insufficient handling of concurrent user creation requests, leading to data inconsistencies and potential authentication problems. Specifically, concurrent processes may overwrite or corrupt user data, complicating user identification and posing security risks. This issue is particularly concerning for APIs that rely on usernames as input parameters, such as PUT /api/v1/users/test_race, where it could lead to further complications.

The advisory is available at huntr.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-2032 since 02/29/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
