phpBB up to 2.0.17 usercp_register.php list_cat cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in phpBB (Forum Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file usercp_register.php. The manipulation of the argument list_cat with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in phpBB 2.0.17 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) error_msg parameter to usercp_register.php, (2) forward_page parameter to login.php, and (3) list_cat parameter to search.php, which are not initialized as variables.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2005. The weakness was shared 10/31/2005 by Stefan Esser with Hardened-PHP Project (Website). The advisory is shared for download at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3418 since 11/01/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 78 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:usercp_register.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22791 (Debian DSA-925-1 : phpbb2 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23969), Tenable (22791), SecurityFocus (BID 15243†), OSVDB (20387†) and Secunia (SA17366†). The entries VDB-27254, VDB-26821, VDB-26766 and VDB-26765 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
