This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-38559. There is no available exploit.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.2. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function memdup_user_nul of the component qedf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: qedf: Ensure the copied buf is NUL terminated Currently, we allocate a count-sized kernel buffer and copy count from userspace to that buffer. Later, we use kstrtouint on this buffer but we don't ensure that the string is terminated inside the buffer, this can lead to OOB read when using kstrtouint. Fix this issue by using memdup_user_nul instead of memdup_user.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-38559 since 06/18/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/04/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207773 (Oracle Linux 8 : kernel (ELSA-2024-7000)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.316, 5.4.278, 5.10.219, 5.15.161, 6.1.93, 6.6.33, 6.8.12 or 6.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1f84a2744ad8/a75001678e1d/769b9fd2af02/dccd97b39ab2/d93318f19d1e/563e60927592/4907f5ad246f/177f43c6892e/d0184a375ee7 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207773) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1418). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
