Summary
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.2. This affects the function sizeof of the component speakup. Executing a manipulation of the argument u16 can lead to out-of-bounds.
This vulnerability appears as CVE-2024-38587. There is no available exploit.
You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.2 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function sizeof of the component speakup. The manipulation of the argument u16 with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: speakup: Fix sizeof() vs ARRAY_SIZE() bug The "buf" pointer is an array of u16 values. This code should be using ARRAY_SIZE() (which is 256) instead of sizeof() (which is 512), otherwise it can the still got out of bounds.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-38587 since 06/18/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207738 (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7009-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.316, 5.4.278, 5.10.219, 5.15.161, 6.1.93, 6.6.33, 6.8.12, 6.9 or 6.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 42f0a3f67158/cd7f3978c2ec/07ef95cc7a57/504178fb7d9f/3726f75a1ccc/c6e1650cf5df/eb1ea64328d4/d52c04474fea/008ab3c53bc4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207738) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1418). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
