Linux Kernel up to 5.4.175/5.10.95/5.15.18/5.16.4 block bio_truncate uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.175/5.10.95/5.15.18/5.16.4. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function bio_truncate of the component block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: Fix wrong offset in bio_truncate() bio_truncate() clears the buffer outside of last block of bdev, however current bio_truncate() is using the wrong offset of page. So it can return the uninitialized data. This happened when both of truncated/corrupted FS and userspace (via bdev) are trying to read the last of bdev.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-48747. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209785 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.12.0 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2781)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.176, 5.10.96, 5.15.19 or 5.16.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6cbf4c731d78/b63e120189fd/4633a79ff8bc/941d5180c430/3ee859e384d4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209785) and EUVD (EUVD-2022-53626). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
