Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.32/6.9.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function blkcg_rstat_flush of the component blk-cgroup. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: blk-cgroup: fix list corruption from resetting io stat Since commit 3b8cc6298724 ("blk-cgroup: Optimize blkcg_rstat_flush()"), each iostat instance is added to blkcg percpu list, so blkcg_reset_stats() can't reset the stat instance by memset(), otherwise the llist may be corrupted. Fix the issue by only resetting the counter part.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-38663 since 06/21/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/03/2025).
