Linux Kernel up to 6.9.3 um register_winch_irq use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.3. Impacted is the function register_winch_irq of the component um. This manipulation causes use after free. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2024-39292. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function register_winch_irq of the component um. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: um: Add winch to winch_handlers before registering winch IRQ Registering a winch IRQ is racy, an interrupt may occur before the winch is added to the winch_handlers list. If that happens, register_winch_irq() adds to that list a winch that is scheduled to be (or has already been) freed, causing a panic later in winch_cleanup(). Avoid the race by adding the winch to the winch_handlers list before registering the IRQ, and rolling back if um_request_irq() fails.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-39292 since 06/21/2024. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/27/2024).

Upgrading to version 4.19.316, 5.4.278, 5.10.219, 5.15.161, 6.1.93, 6.6.33 or 6.9.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 66ea9a7c6824/dc1ff95602ee/351d1a645449/31960d991e43/0c02d425a2fb/434a06c38ee1/73b8e21f76c7/a0fbbd36c156 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
