Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.32/6.9.3. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function __blkcg_rstat_flush of the component blk-cgroup. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: blk-cgroup: fix list corruption from reorder of WRITE ->lqueued __blkcg_rstat_flush() can be run anytime, especially when blk_cgroup_bio_start is being executed. If WRITE of `->lqueued` is re-ordered with READ of 'bisc->lnode.next' in the loop of __blkcg_rstat_flush(), `next_bisc` can be assigned with one stat instance being added in blk_cgroup_bio_start(), then the local list in __blkcg_rstat_flush() could be corrupted. Fix the issue by adding one barrier.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-38384 since 06/21/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/24/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212049 (RHEL 9 : kernel (RHSA-2024:10771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
