Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 5.5 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function fw_ioctl of the file dev/firewire/fwdev.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer signedness error in the fw_ioctl (FW_IOCTL) function in the FireWire (IEEE-1394) drivers (dev/firewire/fwdev.c) in various BSD kernels, including DragonFlyBSD, FreeBSD 5.5, MidnightBSD 0.1-CURRENT before 20061115, NetBSD-current before 20061116, NetBSD-4 before 20061203, and TrustedBSD, allows local users to read arbitrary memory contents via certain negative values of crom_buf->len in an FW_GCROM command. NOTE: this issue has been labeled as an integer overflow, but it is more like an integer signedness error.
The bug was discovered 11/15/2006. The weakness was released 11/16/2006 by Filipe Balestra and Rodrigo Rubira Branco (BSDaemon) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernelhacking.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-6013 since 11/21/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57681 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 148166-02 (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 6 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30347), Tenable (57681), SecurityFocus (BID 21089†), OSVDB (30291†) and Secunia (SA22917†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
