Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apache Jakarta Tomcat up to 5.x. This affects the function der_get_oid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Off-by-one error in the der_get_oid function in mod_auth_kerb 5.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted Kerberos message that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow in the component array.
The bug was discovered 11/21/2006. The weakness was presented 11/21/2006 by Josh Bressers with Red Hat as Bug 216482 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-5989 since 11/20/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a exploit are known.
It is declared as functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67427 (Oracle Linux 4 : mod_auth_kerb (ELSA-2006-0746)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156233 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for mod_auth_kerb (ELSA-2006:0746)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceforge.net.It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
