Summary
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in randombit botan up to 2.19.4/3.4.x. The affected element is an unknown function of the component Certificate Chain Handler. Performing a manipulation of the argument SubjectAlternativeName results in amplification. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2024-34702. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in randombit botan up to 2.19.4/3.4.x. This affects some unknown processing of the component Certificate Chain Handler. The manipulation of the argument SubjectAlternativeName with an unknown input leads to a amplification vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-405. The product does not properly control situations in which an adversary can cause the product to consume or produce excessive resources without requiring the adversary to invest equivalent work or otherwise prove authorization, i.e., the adversary's influence is "asymmetric." This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Botan is a C++ cryptography library. X.509 certificates can identify elliptic curves using either an object identifier or using explicit encoding of the parameters. Prior to 3.5.0 and 2.19.5, checking name constraints in X.509 certificates is quadratic in the number of names and name constraints. An attacker who presented a certificate chain which contained a very large number of names in the SubjectAlternativeName, signed by a CA certificate which contained a large number of name constraints, could cause a denial of service. The problem has been addressed in Botan 3.5.0 and a partial backport has also been applied and is included in Botan 2.19.5.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-34702 since 05/07/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 227908 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-34702), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 2.19.5 or 3.5.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
