RADIUS Protocol RFC 2865 Response weak hash

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in RADIUS Protocol RFC 2865. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component Response Handler. The manipulation results in weak hash. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2024-3596. The attack must be initiated from a local position. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in RADIUS Protocol RFC 2865. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak hash vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-328. The product uses an algorithm that produces a digest (output value) that does not meet security expectations for a hash function that allows an adversary to reasonably determine the original input (preimage attack), find another input that can produce the same hash (2nd preimage attack), or find multiple inputs that evaluate to the same hash (birthday attack). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

RADIUS Protocol under RFC 2865 is susceptible to forgery attacks by a local attacker who can modify any valid Response (Access-Accept, Access-Reject, or Access-Challenge) to any other response using a chosen-prefix collision attack against MD5 Response Authenticator signature.

The advisory is shared for download at datatracker.ietf.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-3596 since 04/10/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207921 (Oracle Linux 7 : freeradius (ELSA-2024-4911)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207921) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1519). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
