Django up to 4.2.13/5.0.6 generate_filename path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Django up to 4.2.13/5.0.6. Impacted is the function generate_filename. Executing a manipulation can lead to path traversal. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2024-39330. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Django up to 4.2.13/5.0.6 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function generate_filename. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Django 5.0 before 5.0.7 and 4.2 before 4.2.14. Derived classes of the django.core.files.storage.Storage base class, when they override generate_filename() without replicating the file-path validations from the parent class, potentially allow directory traversal via certain inputs during a save() call. (Built-in Storage sub-classes are unaffected.)

The advisory is shared for download at docs.djangoproject.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-39330 since 06/23/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210402 (RHEL 8 / 9 : Satellite 6.16.0 (Critical) (RHSA-2024:8906)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.2.14 or 5.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at docs.djangoproject.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (210402). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
