Linux Kernel up to 6.9.6 tipc skb_dst_force reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.220/5.15.161/6.1.95/6.6.35/6.9.6. This affects the function skb_dst_force of the component tipc. Such manipulation leads to reference count. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-40983. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.220/5.15.161/6.1.95/6.6.35/6.9.6. Affected by this issue is the function skb_dst_force of the component tipc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tipc: force a dst refcount before doing decryption As it says in commit 3bc07321ccc2 ("xfrm: Force a dst refcount before entering the xfrm type handlers"): "Crypto requests might return asynchronous. In this case we leave the rcu protected region, so force a refcount on the skb's destination entry before we enter the xfrm type input/output handlers." On TIPC decryption path it has the same problem, and skb_dst_force() should be called before doing decryption to avoid a possible crash. Shuang reported this issue when this warning is triggered: [] WARNING: include/net/dst.h:337 tipc_sk_rcv+0x1055/0x1ea0 [tipc] [] Kdump: loaded Tainted: G W --------- - - 4.18.0-496.el8.x86_64+debug [] Workqueue: crypto cryptd_queue_worker [] RIP: 0010:tipc_sk_rcv+0x1055/0x1ea0 [tipc] [] Call Trace: [] tipc_sk_mcast_rcv+0x548/0xea0 [tipc] [] tipc_rcv+0xcf5/0x1060 [tipc] [] tipc_aead_decrypt_done+0x215/0x2e0 [tipc] [] cryptd_aead_crypt+0xdb/0x190 [] cryptd_queue_worker+0xed/0x190 [] process_one_work+0x93d/0x17e0

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-40983 since 07/12/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207738 (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7009-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.221, 5.15.162, 6.1.96, 6.6.36 or 6.9.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3eb1b3962789/692803b39a36/623c90d86a61/b57a4a2dc874/6808b4137167/2ebe8f840c74 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
