A vulnerability has been found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 7.0.8 on Windows (Document Reader Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code in the library AcroPDF.dll of the component ActiveX Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Adobe Reader (Adobe Acrobat Reader) 7.0 through 7.0.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long argument string to the LoadFile method in an AcroPDF ActiveX control.
The weakness was presented 11/30/2006 by Michal Bucko (Website). The advisory is shared at adobe.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6027 since 11/21/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23776 (Adobe Reader < 8.0 AcroPDF ActiveX Control Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115486 (Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB06-20)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13913. In this case the pattern AcroPDF.PDF is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4911.
