Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.5 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component xattr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: jfs: xattr: fix buffer overflow for invalid xattr When an xattr size is not what is expected, it is printed out to the kernel log in hex format as a form of debugging. But when that xattr size is bigger than the expected size, printing it out can cause an access off the end of the buffer. Fix this all up by properly restricting the size of the debug hex dump in the kernel log.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-40902 since 07/12/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/27/2024).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207802 (ubuntu_linux USN-7003-4: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7003-4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.317, 5.4.279, 5.10.221, 5.15.162, 6.1.95, 6.6.35 or 6.9.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f0dedb5c511e/1e84c9b18381/fc745f6e83cb/480e5bc21f2c/33aecc5799c9/4598233d9748/b537cb2f4c4a/7c55b78818cf is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
