The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-48773. There is no exploit available.
It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.101/5.15.24/5.16.10. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function rpcrdma_ep_create of the component xprtrdma. The manipulation of the argument error with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xprtrdma: fix pointer derefs in error cases of rpcrdma_ep_create If there are failures then we must not leave the non-NULL pointers with the error value, otherwise `rpcrdma_ep_destroy` gets confused and tries free them, resulting in an Oops.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-48773 since 06/20/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209785 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.12.0 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2781)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.102, 5.15.25 or 5.16.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1e7433fb95cc/9921c866dc36/2526d4d8b209/a9c10b5b3b67 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (209785). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
