Linux Kernel up to 5.15.24/5.16.10 net smc_fback_error_report infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.24/5.16.10. This affects the function smc_fback_error_report of the component net. Executing a manipulation can lead to infinite loop. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2022-48780. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.24/5.16.10 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function smc_fback_error_report of the component net. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/smc: Avoid overwriting the copies of clcsock callback functions The callback functions of clcsock will be saved and replaced during the fallback. But if the fallback happens more than once, then the copies of these callback functions will be overwritten incorrectly, resulting in a loop call issue: clcsk->sk_error_report |- smc_fback_error_report() <------------------------------| |- smc_fback_forward_wakeup() | (loop) |- clcsock_callback() (incorrectly overwritten) | |- smc->clcsk_error_report() ------------------| So this patch fixes the issue by saving these function pointers only once in the fallback and avoiding overwriting.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-48780 since 06/20/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.15.25 or 5.16.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7de7ba7a8bd4/f00b6c976ae0/1de9770d121e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
