Linux Kernel up to 5.15.28/5.16.14 mlx5 uninitialized resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.28/5.16.14. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component mlx5. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vdpa/mlx5: add validation for VIRTIO_NET_CTRL_MQ_VQ_PAIRS_SET command When control vq receives a VIRTIO_NET_CTRL_MQ_VQ_PAIRS_SET command request from the driver, presently there is no validation against the number of queue pairs to configure, or even if multiqueue had been negotiated or not is unverified. This may lead to kernel panic due to uninitialized resource for the queues were there any bogus request sent down by untrusted driver. Tie up the loose ends there.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-48864 since 07/16/2024. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

Upgrading to version 5.15.29 or 5.16.15 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e7e118416465/9f6effca7562/ed0f849fc3a6 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
