Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.105/5.15.28/5.16.14. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function dsp_pipeline_build of the component mISDN. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mISDN: Fix memory leak in dsp_pipeline_build() dsp_pipeline_build() allocates dup pointer by kstrdup(cfg), but then it updates dup variable by strsep(&dup, "|"). As a result when it calls kfree(dup), the dup variable contains NULL. Found by Linux Driver Verification project (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-48863 since 07/16/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207818 (ubuntu_linux USN-7039-1: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7039-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.106, 5.15.29 or 5.16.15 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a3d5fcc6cf2e/7777b1f795af/640445d6fc05/c6a502c22999 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (207818). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
