Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in SUN JDK up to 1.4.2_08 (Programming Tool Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the component Java Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in reflection APIs in Java SDK and JRE 1.4.2_08 and earlier and JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 3 and earlier allow remote attackers to escape the Java sandbox and access arbitrary files or execute arbitrary applications via unknown attack vectors, a different set of vulnerabilities than CVE-2005-3905. NOTE: this is associated with the "second and third issues" identified in SUNALERT:102003.
The bug was discovered 11/28/2005. The weakness was published 11/30/2005 by Adam Gowdiak as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3906 since 11/30/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20731 (GLSA-200601-10 : Sun and Blackdown Java: Applet privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115306 (Sun Java JRE and SDK Multiple Sandbox Security Bypass Issues).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23251), Tenable (20731), SecurityFocus (BID 15615†), OSVDB (21236†) and Secunia (SA17748†). Similar entries are available at VDB-27181, VDB-27179, VDB-27178 and VDB-28638. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
