Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7 cxl_find_nvdimm_bridge null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7. This impacts the function cxl_find_nvdimm_bridge. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2024-41085. There is not any exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7. This affects the function cxl_find_nvdimm_bridge. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cxl/mem: Fix no cxl_nvd during pmem region auto-assembling When CXL subsystem is auto-assembling a pmem region during cxl endpoint port probing, always hit below calltrace. Currently the cxl_nvd is registered after the endpoint port probe. The endpoint probe, in the case of autoassembly of regions, can cause a pmem region probe requiring the not yet available cxl_nvd. Adjust the sequence so this dependency is met. This requires adding a port parameter to cxl_find_nvdimm_bridge() that can be used to query the ancestor root port. The endpoint port is not yet available, but will share a common ancestor with its parent, so start the query from there instead.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-41085 since 07/12/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210060 (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS / 24.04 LTS : Linux kernel kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7089-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.9.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1d064e4fbebc/84ec985944ef is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (210060) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1722). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
