CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7. This issue affects the function fsl_asoc_card_audmux_init of the component fsl-asoc-card. The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-42089. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function fsl_asoc_card_audmux_init of the component fsl-asoc-card. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: fsl-asoc-card: set priv->pdev before using it priv->pdev pointer was set after being used in fsl_asoc_card_audmux_init(). Move this assignment at the start of the probe function, so sub-functions can correctly use pdev through priv. fsl_asoc_card_audmux_init() dereferences priv->pdev to get access to the dev struct, used with dev_err macros. As priv is zero-initialised, there would be a NULL pointer dereference. Note that if priv->dev is dereferenced before assignment but never used, for example if there is no error to be printed, the driver won't crash probably due to compiler optimisations.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-42089 since 07/29/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207802 (ubuntu_linux USN-7003-4: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7003-4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.317, 5.4.279, 5.10.221, 5.15.162, 6.1.97, 6.6.37 or 6.9.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ae81535ce250/8896e18b7c36/3662eb2170e5/544ab46b7ece/8faf91e58425/29bc9e7c7539/7c18b4d89ff9/90f3feb24172 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207802) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1722). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
