Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7 davinci_gpio_probe array index

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7 and classified as problematic. This affects the function davinci_gpio_probe. Such manipulation leads to array index. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2024-42092. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9.7. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function davinci_gpio_probe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpio: davinci: Validate the obtained number of IRQs Value of pdata->gpio_unbanked is taken from Device Tree. In case of broken DT due to any error this value can be any. Without this value validation there can be out of chips->irqs array boundaries access in davinci_gpio_probe(). Validate the obtained nirq value so that it won't exceed the maximum number of IRQs per bank. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-42092 since 07/29/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/26/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207802 (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7003-4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.317, 5.4.279, 5.10.221, 5.15.162, 6.1.97, 6.6.37 or 6.9.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a8d78984fdc1/cd7572198433/e44a83bf15c4/70b48899f3f2/89d7008af494/2d83492259ad/c542e51306d5/7aa9b96e9a73 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207802) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1722). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
