Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in xwiki-platform up to 14.10.20/15.5.4/15.10.5/16.0.0 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a neutralization of directive vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-96. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes code syntax before inserting the input into an executable resource, such as a library, configuration file, or template. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. When uploading an attachment with a malicious filename, malicious JavaScript code could be executed. This requires a social engineering attack to get the victim into uploading a file with a malicious name. The malicious code is solely executed during the upload and affects only the user uploading the attachment. While this allows performing actions in the name of that user, it seems unlikely that a user wouldn't notice the malicious filename while uploading the attachment. This has been patched in XWiki 14.10.21, 15.5.5, 15.10.6 and 16.0.0.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-37900 since 06/10/2024. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

Upgrading to version 14.10.21, 15.5.5, 15.10.6 or 16.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6cdd69d31d6bf3caa7f40ec55eb317e4e528ad28 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
