Canonical wpa_supplicant uncontrolled search path

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Canonical wpa_supplicant (unknown version) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uncontrolled search path vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-427. The product uses a fixed or controlled search path to find resources, but one or more locations in that path can be under the control of unintended actors. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Ubuntu wpa_supplicant that resulted in loading of arbitrary shared objects, which allows a local unprivileged attacker to escalate privileges to the user that wpa_supplicant runs as (usually root). Membership in the netdev group or access to the dbus interface of wpa_supplicant allow an unprivileged user to specify an arbitrary path to a module to be loaded by the wpa_supplicant process; other escalation paths might exist.

The weakness was released by Rory Mcnamara. The advisory is available at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-5290 since 05/23/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1574 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Applying the patch 2.1-0ubuntu1.7+esm5/2.4-0ubuntu6.8+esm1/2:2.6-15ubuntu2.8+esm1/2:2.9-1ubuntu4.4/2:2.10-6ubuntu2.1/2:2.10-21ubuntu0.1 is able to eliminate this problem.
