CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Ethereal. This vulnerability affects the function dissect_ospf_v3_address_prefix of the component Protocol Dissector. Performing a manipulation results in stack-based overflow. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3651. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function dissect_ospf_v3_address_prefix of the component Protocol Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the dissect_ospf_v3_address_prefix function in the OSPF protocol dissector in Ethereal 0.10.12, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted packets.

The bug was discovered 12/09/2005. The weakness was presented 12/10/2005 with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at idefense.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-3651 since 11/18/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20315 (GLSA-200512-06 : Ethereal: Buffer overflow in OSPF protocol dissector), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117764 (CentOS Security Update for Ethereal (CESA-2006:0156)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23575), Tenable (20315), SecurityFocus (BID 15794†), OSVDB (21599†) and Secunia (SA17973†). See VDB-26736 and VDB-27817 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
