This issue affects an unknown code block of the component SMM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a local privilege escalation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Improper validation in a model specific register (MSR) could allow a malicious program with ring0 access to modify SMM configuration while SMI lock is enabled, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution.
The advisory is shared at amd.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-31315 since 04/27/2023. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212310 (SUSE SLED15 / SLES15 / openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel-firmware (SUSE-SU-2024:4255-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (212310). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
