Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Red Hat Satellite 6. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component Host Init Config Template. The manipulation of the argument Install Packages results in command injection. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-7700. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Satellite 6. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown part of the component Host Init Config Template. The manipulation of the argument Install Packages with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A command injection flaw was found in the "Host Init Config" template in the Foreman application, via the "Install Packages" field on the "Register Host" page. This issue may allow an attacker with the necessary privileges to inject arbitrary commands into the configuration, potentially allowing unauthorized command execution during host registration. Although this issue requires user interaction to execute injected commands, it poses a significant risk if an unsuspecting user runs the generated registration script.

The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-7700 since 08/12/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 08/31/2025). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
