Summary
A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.103/6.6.44/6.10.2. This impacts the function set_ownership of the component sysctl. Executing a manipulation of the argument i_uid/i_gid can lead to initialization.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-42312. There is no exploit available.
It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.103/6.6.44/6.10.2 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function set_ownership of the component sysctl. The manipulation of the argument i_uid/i_gid with an unknown input leads to a initialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-665. The product does not initialize or incorrectly initializes a resource, which might leave the resource in an unexpected state when it is accessed or used. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sysctl: always initialize i_uid/i_gid Always initialize i_uid/i_gid inside the sysfs core so set_ownership() can safely skip setting them. Commit 5ec27ec735ba ("fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c: fix the default values of i_uid/i_gid on /proc/sys inodes.") added defaults for i_uid/i_gid when set_ownership() was not implemented. It also missed adjusting net_ctl_set_ownership() to use the same default values in case the computation of a better value failed.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-42312 since 07/30/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207884 (openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:3483-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.104, 6.6.45 or 6.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1deae34db9f4/ffde3af4b29b/c7e2f43d182f/98ca62ba9e2b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207884) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2855). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
