It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.10.2. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function devm_kzalloc of the component PCM6240. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoc: PCM6240: Return directly after a failed devm_kzalloc() in pcmdevice_i2c_probe() The value “-ENOMEM” was assigned to the local variable “ret” in one if branch after a devm_kzalloc() call failed at the beginning. This error code will trigger then a pcmdevice_remove() call with a passed null pointer so that an undesirable dereference will be performed. Thus return the appropriate error code directly.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-43822 since 08/17/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 249855 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-43822), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fa6f16eff732/3722873d49a1 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (249855) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1875). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
