Red Hat Undertow Proxy Protocol Parser information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Undertow and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Proxy Protocol Parser. Such manipulation leads to information disclosure. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-7885. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Red Hat Undertow (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Proxy Protocol Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

A vulnerability was found in Undertow where the ProxyProtocolReadListener reuses the same StringBuilder instance across multiple requests. This issue occurs when the parseProxyProtocolV1 method processes multiple requests on the same HTTP connection. As a result, different requests may share the same StringBuilder instance, potentially leading to information leakage between requests or responses. In some cases, a value from a previous request or response may be erroneously reused, which could lead to unintended data exposure. This issue primarily results in errors and connection termination but creates a risk of data leakage in multi-request environments.

The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-7885 since 08/16/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/19/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207972 (RHEL 8 / 9 : Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 8.0 (RHSA-2024:7441)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207972), EUVD (EUVD-2024-2542) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1922). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
