Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.10.2. Impacted is the function devm_free_percpu of the component devres. Such manipulation leads to memory leak.
This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-43871. There is no exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.10.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function devm_free_percpu of the component devres. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: devres: Fix memory leakage caused by driver API devm_free_percpu() It will cause memory leakage when use driver API devm_free_percpu() to free memory allocated by devm_alloc_percpu(), fixed by using devres_release() instead of devres_destroy() within devm_free_percpu().
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-43871 since 08/17/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207773 (Oracle Linux 8 : kernel (ELSA-2024-7000)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.320, 5.4.282, 5.10.224, 5.15.165, 6.1.103, 6.6.44 or 6.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 700e8abd65b1/b044588a16a9/ef56dcdca8f2/3047f99caec2/3dcd0673e476/b67552d7c61f/95065edb8ebb/bd50a974097b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207773) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2855). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
