Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.6. The affected element is the function execution_buffer of the component vmwgfx. Executing a manipulation can lead to buffer overflow.
This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2022-48887. No exploit is available.
Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.6. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function execution_buffer of the component vmwgfx. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/vmwgfx: Remove rcu locks from user resources User resource lookups used rcu to avoid two extra atomics. Unfortunately the rcu paths were buggy and it was easy to make the driver crash by submitting command buffers from two different threads. Because the lookups never show up in performance profiles replace them with a regular spin lock which fixes the races in accesses to those shared resources. Fixes kernel oops'es in IGT's vmwgfx execution_buffer stress test and seen crashes with apps using shared resources.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-48887 since 08/21/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/17/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212625 (EulerOS 2.0 SP12 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2953)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7ac9578e45b2/a309c7194e8a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (212625) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1888). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
