Linux Kernel up to 6.1.6 efi null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.269/5.4.228/5.10.163/5.15.88/6.1.6. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component efi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: efi: fix NULL-deref in init error path In cases where runtime services are not supported or have been disabled, the runtime services workqueue will never have been allocated. Do not try to destroy the workqueue unconditionally in the unlikely event that EFI initialisation fails to avoid dereferencing a NULL pointer.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-48879 since 07/16/2024. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210696 (EulerOS 2.0 SP9 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2815)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.270, 5.4.229, 5.10.164, 5.15.89 or 6.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 585a0b2b3ae7/5fcf75a8a4c3/4ca71bc0e199/e2ea55564229/adc96d30f650/703c13fe3c9a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (210696) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1888). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
