Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.7 and classified as critical. Impacted is the function do_mmap. The manipulation results in memory leak.
This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2023-52902. No exploit exists.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.7. Affected is the function do_mmap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nommu: fix memory leak in do_mmap() error path The preallocation of the maple tree nodes may leak if the error path to "error_just_free" is taken. Fix this by moving the freeing of the maple tree nodes to a shared location for all error paths.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-52902 since 08/21/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239850 (TencentOS Server 4: kernel (TSSA-2024:0980)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1442d51026c5/7f31cced5724 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (239850) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1888). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
