Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.46/6.10.5. Affected by this issue is the function BLKSTOL2 of the component jfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: jfs: Fix shift-out-of-bounds in dbDiscardAG When searching for the next smaller log2 block, BLKSTOL2() returned 0, causing shift exponent -1 to be negative. This patch fixes the issue by exiting the loop directly when negative shift is found.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-44938 since 08/21/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207884 (openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:3483-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.47 or 6.10.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f650148b4394/234e6ea0855c/7063b80268e2 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
