Details
A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6/7/8/9 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component libvirt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in libvirt. A refactor of the code fetching the list of interfaces for multiple APIs introduced a corner case on platforms where allocating 0 bytes of memory results in a NULL pointer. This corner case would lead to a NULL-pointer dereference and subsequent crash of virtinterfaced. This issue could allow clients connecting to the read-only socket to crash the virtinterfaced daemon.
The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-8235 since 08/27/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
